A chiropractic adjustment for an animal can take from 5 to 20 minutes depending on the animal in question. Some are more relaxed and can be adjusted quickly and easily, while others may take longer to relax. We try to only ever adjust your animal in their comfort zone, so they always walk away with a good experience.
An adjustment can cause soreness by restoring movement to an area that has become accustomed to being ‘stuck’, and the animal has developed compensations to work around the dysfunctional area. This soreness should only last a day or two. It is not uncommon for these areas to slowly lose the motion and return to old patterns and it may take a few adjustments to fully restore the function and for the animal to ‘hold’ the adjustment.
An adjustment should never hurt, though on occasion an animal that is currently experiencing severe pain or has a chronic problem may note discomfort momentarily.
The answer here is a little more complicated…If your animal has had previous adjustments or body work and responded well, then absolutely have the adjusted*! However; if you pet has never been adjusted nor had any body work of any kind before, it may be wise to wait until after the big show/competition until you know how they will respond. Some animals can become sore and need a day to recover and feel the benefits! Call our office, your trainer, or your vet to discuss the possible advantages or disadvantages of having an adjustment performed before your big event!
*Check the rules of your competition, some may consider adjustments or body work immediately prior to competition an unfair advantage
Individualized recommendations will be given after each adjustment for your animal. Often the animal should take the rest of the day off. Not all our patients think the same way, older pets may note an increase in energy! If this is the case, feel free to enjoy some extra play time with your pet!
Animal Chiropractic treatment and Veterinary medicine work very well together. Chiropractic treatments are not intended to replace traditional Veterinary care, but rather to supplement and compliment the work traditional veterinary care provides.
YES! Small animals such as dogs (even big dogs), cats, and other house pets are welcome to schedule an appointment in office! Unfortunately, due to our location we cannot offer haul-in appointments for larger hooved companions, but we do offer farm calls to your property or barn to treat large animals! Please call the office to discuss farm calls.
